JACKSON, MISS — The Mississippi Department of Human Services, Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) recently visited Canton High School to recognize students for their commitment to community service after they created 500 heartfelt cards for older Mississippians receiving home-delivered meals.
The visit highlighted the importance of fostering relationships among generations and encouraging the young people to actively participant in supporting older adults.
Students took time to create cards filled with thoughtful messages of kindness and encouragement. The cards will be distributed to home-delivered meal recipients across Mississippi, offering a personal reminder that they are valued and appreciated within their communities.
“When I was told about the opportunity to make cards for the elderly, I was highly dedicated to doing it,” said Christian R., Senior at Canton High School. “Plus, my grandmother, who had Alzheimer’s, used to get these meals. So, I know what it’s like to have someone in the family be a part of this program.”
To celebrate their efforts, the DAAS team members presented participating students with certificates accrediting four hours of service for their time, generosity and dedication to making a difference.
“These students have shown us that being a light in someone’s day doesn’t always require a grand gesture,” said KenYada Blake-Washington, Division Director of Aging and Adult Services. “For our elderly population, a few kind words can make a world of difference. We hope that these students inspire others to get out there and find ways to serve the elderly and their communities.”
MDHS commends the students, faculty and staff of Canton High School for their community service and demonstrating how a meaningful act of kindness can have a large impact across the state.
